Instagram announced that it was going to be testing a new profile layout, which shows more emphasis on the user, rather than on the profile following. The company said:
“Over the next several weeks, you may see features re-arranged at the top of your profile including changes to icons, buttons and the way you navigate between tabs”
The standard Instagram grid layout won’t change, but the profile biography has changed its layout. A new feature is seeing the mutual profiles that you and another user both follow. Rather than as a highlight button in the header, IGTV is now a tab on the main feed. Recently, Instagram introduced a feature that allowed IGTV to be shared in stories, in an attempt for the platform to integrate the video rather than a standalone product. Also, the ‘follow’ and ‘message’ buttons are now next to each other.
Business accounts are also seeing new buttons in the header. A new button called ‘Start Order’, as well as a new tab in the main content named ‘Shop’. Instagram has recently been pushing new shopping features within the app, so this new design could be incorporating a more accessible and aesthetically pleasing way of advertising products. Other buttons featured were previously there, but have been rearranged in the new design.
Instagram has said that they will be working on these changes over the next few weeks. The company will be testing phases and combinations of their design features. This experiment with the community will develop with feedback, so anything specific you like or hate, let them know!
